The emerging role of the pharmacy profession in migraine care

This year’s Pharmacy in Practice Conference will spotlight the transformative potential of the pharmacy profession in migraine care.

The session features a multidisciplinary panel of esteemed experts, including Rob Music, CEO of The Migraine Trust, Abigail Duthie, an experienced pharmacist from Aberdeenshire, and Dr. Callum Duncan, a consultant neurologist from Aberdeen.

Together, they will share insights from an innovative Scottish initiative that is reshaping migraine management in community pharmacies.

A Collaborative Vision: The Scottish Migraine Care Pilot

Migraine care is at a crossroads. Increasing demand for specialist consultations has led to long waiting times, while primary care struggles to meet demand.

This session will delve into how empowering pharmacists with the right tools and knowledge can contribute to the care of people who suffer from migraine.

The Pharmacy in Practice Conference 2025 will highlight the success of a pioneering two-year pilot project led by The Migraine Trust and NHS Grampian. This initiative, supported by funding from the Scottish Government, aims to equip pharmacists with specialized training to support migraine patients more effectively.

In its first year, the Grampian project delivered remarkable outcomes:

  • Over 200 pharmacists have engaged with eLearning modules, and 73 staff attended live training sessions.
  • A Grampian-wide public awareness campaign was launched, increasing public understanding of pharmacists as migraine care providers.
  • Pharmacy staff’s confidence in managing migraine patients rose dramatically—from 40% feeling confident before training to 100% after training.
  • Following awareness initiatives, the percentage of patients willing to consult a pharmacist for migraine care jumped from 14% to 77%.

Building Momentum for Nationwide Change

The panel will discuss how the Scottish pilot’s success paved the way for nationwide adoption.

Healthcare leaders across the UK are exploring ways to replicate this model to improve migraine care in their communities.

We hope you can join us in March to help forge a way forward.
