We are incredibly proud to announce that Dr Ron Daniels, founder of the UK Sepsis Trust, will lead a session at the annual Pharmacy in Practice Conference.
This session will provide essential insights into sepsis care and its importance for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and their teams.
Dr Ron Daniels, an NHS consultant and a pioneer in sepsis care, founded the UK Sepsis Trust in 2012. His groundbreaking work in developing the Sepsis 6 pathway has profoundly impacted patient care, both within the UK and internationally. The Sepsis 6, a protocol designed to ensure the rapid identification and treatment of sepsis, has been adopted by 96% of British hospitals and is used in 37 countries worldwide. Dr Daniels’ expertise in systems and translational medicine has made him a key figure in the fight against sepsis, which claims millions of lives globally each year.
At the conference, Dr Daniels will emphasise the crucial role that pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and their teams play in early detection and intervention for sepsis. Sepsis is a time-critical medical emergency, and pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and their teams are often among the first healthcare providers to encounter patients with symptoms.
Understanding the signs of sepsis and acting quickly can make a significant difference in patient outcomes. With sepsis impacting patients across all healthcare settings, the need for pharmacy teams to be well-informed is more important than ever.
The UK Sepsis Trust has been at the forefront of driving awareness and education about sepsis, particularly through initiatives like the “Just Ask: Could it be Sepsis?” campaign. This campaign has been vital in increasing public awareness of sepsis as a medical emergency, raising recognition from 27% in 2012 to 91% in 2024, according to YouGov polls. Dr Daniels will share how pharmacy teams can support this effort by helping to educate patients and the broader community about the symptoms of sepsis and the importance of seeking prompt treatment.
Dr Daniels will also present updates on the latest NICE guidelines for sepsis care, revised in January 2024, which include new tools and recommendations for healthcare professionals. Pharmacists and their teams will gain valuable insights into how these guidelines can be integrated into their practice to improve patient outcomes. With the Sepsis 6 pathway and updated guidelines, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to contribute to life-saving interventions, particularly in community and hospital settings where they can identify at-risk patients early.
For pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals attending the conference, Dr Daniels’s contribution will offer practical strategies for supporting the early recognition of sepsis and improving outcomes for those affected. By working alongside other healthcare providers, pharmacists can play a pivotal role in ensuring that patients receive timely treatment, helping to prevent sepsis-related deaths and reducing the long-term effects on survivors.
Dr Daniels’s leadership in this area has already saved countless lives, and his insights will provide delegates with the tools to continue this critical work within their practice.
The annual Pharmacy in Practice Conference 2025 will occur on March 12th at the Novotel Edinburgh Park.
